The Fun Zone provides an extensive range of structured sessions that are appropriately planned and risk assessed, taking into consideration the physical environment and number, age and ability of children taking part as well as staff and resources required.
Our approach is intended to develop children's learning and promote independence through play and peer interaction and give the children an opportunity to explore a range of new experiences.
We are keen to ensure that children make choices about their service and as a result we strike a balance between structure and flexibility.
For instance our after school service gives children the opportunity to relax after the rigours of the school day. Each site has a designated area called the 'chill-out zone' where children can unwind and socialise with their peers.
Typically each site is divided into specific zones where designated activities take place. These zones and the resources available within them are rotated to ensure variety. Examples of the zones and typical activities are listed below.
pens, paints, gluing, dough, clay, sand and water
relaxing, socialising and watching tv/dvd
including Lego, Magnetix, and K'nex
music, dance and karaoke
role-play, dressing-up and small world
board games, team games and skill games
a variety of fiction and knowledge books
food and refreshments
From time to time our planned activities include outings to visit places and facilities that provide opportunities to expand the children's learning and development. All trips are fully risk assessed and the mimimum ratio for all outings is normally one adult to every five children. Parents/carers are required to give consent for their child to take part and occasionally we ask for a small contribution towards the cost of transportation. Any admission fees are inclusive.
Example of visits over the last few years include The Royal Armouries, Kirkstall Abbey, Tropical World, Standedge Tunnel, Meanwood Valley Farm, Xscape, Radio Aire Studio Tour, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Thwaite Mill. We also have a number of visits to local facilities including local parks and libraries and take park in or contribute to local community projects.
More recently we have begun to run full day trips to regional tourist attractions. These trips are additional to our childcare service and the number of places are limited. There is a surcharge which is advertised. Days Out trips have included Dinostar and Humber Bridge, (Hull), Kilnsey Park (Skipton), John Bull Rock Factory (Bridlington), National Football Museum (Preston) and Filey Lifeboat Station and Beach.
